My sessions begin with rapport building where I focus on creating a comfortable space for a child to learn and grow. I incorporate preferred toys/activities into my sessions to increase motivation and maintain engagement – therapy should be fun! Sessions are individualized, moving at the child’s pace with the goal of building confidence while increasing speech intelligibility. I review the vowels and consonants within a child’s repertoire in order to choose target words as well as shape vocal approximations. Best word approximations are used for a child’s high frequency and/or favorites with the aim of working towards the adult form. I am trained in the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP) which is often used as it is rooted in principles of motor learning. Some strategies utilized include errorless teaching (cueing before failure), error correction, mass distributed practice with use of cues like direct modeling, multisensory cues, gesture/visual/verbal cues as well as mixing and varying tasks to avoid overgeneralization. Supports are used and faded in order to allow for independence as well as generalization of skills to various environments.
Parent education and involvement is crucial in facilitating speech-motor skills in various settings. Parents and caregivers are able to observe every session through an observation room with a one-way mirror, or virtually through a private livestream link. Following each session, I discuss what was worked on during the session as well as ways to implement additional practice into the home in order to encourage generalization of learned skills. Occasionally, handouts are provided with additional information. I am always available via email to ensure a child’s communication needs are met.
If a child has an AAC device, they are encouraged to bring it to sessions for consistent use across settings. If a child does not have a device, however, and is appropriate I am able to complete a formal AAC evaluation at my center. In addition to high-tech, speech-generating devices, I also incorporate low-tech options such as visual supports and sign language. I utilize Sign-to-Talk as a bridge to vocal communication. Within my sessions, I use a total communication approach where I welcome all forms of communication including vocal speech, AAC, gestures, signs, and visuals in order for children to successfully communicate.
