My treatment sessions are fast paced and include use of highly motivating activities to increase participation and engagement. I utilize the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP) which is based upon principles of motor learning. I implement many different strategies within treatment sessions including visual, verbal, and gesture cues, errorless teaching (cueing before failure), error correction, mass to distributed practice, blocked to random practice, and mixing and varying tasks to avoid overgeneralization. I involve parents so that they can implement strategies within the home environment as well as to help establish motivating activities for the child and important words to practice that are specific to each child (i.e. family member’s names, favorite foods/drinks/toys/activities, etc.).
Parents are encouraged to observe each treatment session and I provide explanation of reasons for treatment approaches as well as instruction on how to practice skills within the home environment.
If a child has an AAC device, they are encouraged to have their device present during all times of their day, including treatment sessions. If a child is a candidate for an AAC device and does not yet have one, I will refer to a specialist for a formal AAC evaluation. Sign language is often used within our treatment sessions as a bridge to vocal communication.
