For a child with CAS, depending on their age, treatment will focus on a small number of functional words within an enjoyable context - either natural play or game-based drill. As words are mastered, new functional words are chosen to take their place. Periodic measurements of intelligibility are taken to ensure that skills are generalizing. Children will be supported with visual, verbal, tactile, and guided movement patterns during speech practice according to their individual needs and response. I keep my practice small purposefully, so can be very flexible with dose frequency and session durations to meet the needs of different children and different families.
You may be as involved as you want to be! At the very least, you will need to give me background information on what your child likes to do and words that they need or want to say frequently. At the most, you'll have the opportunity to learn the supports that work best for your child. The only time I will ever ask a parent to withdraw is if the child is resistant to working with them. My child was resistant to working with me - I get it. Sometimes, you just need to be Mom or Dad!
I routine provide low tech solutions to meet immediate needs and reduce the family's combined frustration with communication breakdowns. I can and will provide full AAC evaluations for low-, mid-, or high-tech options that will meet the needs of individual children and their families while they work towards functional verbal communication or to support the functional verbal communication they have achieved.
