Over the many years I have worked with CAS I have found songs, rhymes, and picture books to be a great way to begin treatment when children are very young. They benefit from the familiarity and predictability, and are able to follow along and watch the oral movements at a pace that works for them. Using these materials, we are able to start at a level where a child can have success participating in the activity while building on their skills. We focus on shaping sounds in their repertoire into increasingly complex syllable patterns as well as working on the movements need to add sounds they are not yet producing.
Parents are invited into the sessions to observer therapy and then offered the opportunity to practice with their child. This gives the parents the chance to learn hands-on how to help their child, and an opportunity to voice any questions or concerns they may have.
I have used sign and low-tech picture pages to facilitate communication at the beginning of the therapy process.
