My therapy sessions often look like structured play. For children with CAS, I incorporate visuals, mirror work, and movement throughout our time together. Games, swings, books, and even app-based play are all carefully tailored to target specific sound patterns and words. Activities are high-interest, engaging, and almost always include hand movements or games to keep little hands busy. Sessions are designed for high repetition of target words and movement patterns, which is essential for motor learning. I love pulling from a variety of resources—always guided by what works best for your child.
From identifying challenging movement patterns to selecting target words based on those patterns—and then choosing highly functional “challenge words”—parents are directly involved every step of the way. They play an integral role in therapy sessions and in supporting highly structured daily home practice. I provide DTTC information and guidance, links to videos and books, visuals and videos for homework, which parents take the lead on using at home.
I have used both low- and high-tech AAC to support communication during activities like game play and book reading—helping children make choices, ask questions, and comment during play. Core boards and home pages on high-tech devices have been valuable tools for helping children clearly communicate daily needs, such as what they want to eat, their preferences, or how they’re feeling. For some of my clients entering kindergarten or first grade, I’ve used high-tech AAC to support language and early literacy development. Many of these children are beginning to spell what they want to express, and their devices help reinforce orthographic mapping and developing reading skills.
