With the types of settings I work in (preschool, elementary-high school, university clinic, private), the main approach I utilize is Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) through motivating activities. DTTC is a therapy approach that gets a lot of repetitions of sound movements within words and phrases! With younger children, I use therapy through child-led play. I can plan all I want, but if the activity or material is not motivating, we will not get much out of the session. Kids at a younger age prefer play, and actually learn the best through it! I use many strategies to get kiddos to look at my face and work through the prompting levels of DTTC - simultaneous production(saying it at the same time as me), immediate repetition (you say it right after I say it), delayed repetition (I say, but you wait until I clap to say it), generalization (no model provided, you say later on!). In this approach, we get many repetitions as we work through the levels. Each "level" gets a kiddo closer to generalization outside of the speech session because it allows them to build the motor plan for a sequence of sounds through high reps and lessening of cues as they become more successful! Based on a kiddos' success, I am able to adjust how much and what type of feedback they are getting, as well as types of cues (e.g. visual, verbal, etc.). I also have experience with the Kaufman method and am beginning to gain with ReST!
Parents are made aware of the overall Individualized Education Plan that lists each aspect of how their child's needs are being met in multiple areas. They are apart of choosing target movement sequences in speech, as well as helping practice our most successful words at home (through very easy strategies!). They are primary decision makers, I do not take that lightly!
I have been able to get devices for the kiddos that I serve when they are communication risk takers and have learned to communicate with intent! Until they are ready for that, communication is made available by any means showing success. This can include signs, gestures, picture symbols, etc. We start here and work our to the mode that is most successful and provides for communication success in all settings!
