Assessment of your child's speech and language skills will be thorough and ongoing to ensure the most effective strategies are used as your child progresses through treatment.
Treatment will focus on: 1. Making speech therapy a place where your child loves to learn. 2. Practicing words and sentences that are important to your child and that will help them develop clearer speech. Verbal, visual and motor cues will all be part of the support system to help your child learn. 3. Developing strategies to ease frustration when communication breaks down. 4. Making sure you know how to support your child in home practice for learning every day.
Treatment is generally recommended for 1-3 sessions per week, with sessions lasting 30-45 minutes. Treatment will incorporate books, play, and art activities. We will use these activities to practice a set of words as many as 100-200 times per session.
Parents are asked to help me understand their child's unique skills and interests, as well as to understand how their child's communication needs change over the course of therapy. I will provide training to parents on cuing that is effective for their child, and how to incorporate practice and supportive communication at home. I regularly talk to caregivers about how their child is progressing and what therapy will look like in the future. I welcome collaboration with other professionals working with their child.
AAC can be a powerful tool to support language development. I incorporate sign language and picture supports in therapy sessions and home programs to support a child's communication. I have access to LAMP (Language Acquisition through Motor Planning), as well as contacts to AAC specialists that assist in trialing and obtaining the best AAC system for each child.
