- Kristin Roth, Pediatric Speech & Language Therapy
In the beginning, I facilitate speech movement sequences to develop ‘core’ words (e.g. ‘help’, ‘all done’, ‘eat’) that help children attain functional verbal communication and reduce their frustration. I use verbal, visual, and tactile cues to elicit specific speech movements and coordination. I educate parents about CAS and coach them on techniques used in therapy for home carryover - providing continuity and reinforcement of skills. The use of AAC may be considered to give the child a way to communicate while working on verbal expression. I try to use activities/games that are naturally repetitive and keep children engaged. Increasing the level of sound sequence complexity will continue throughout the course of therapy to increase intelligibility.
I have had a long-term passion for increasing my knowledge of CAS through continuing education and observation of treatment sessions with seasoned therapists
On my personal website, I provide ways for parents to increase their child's interest and desire to practice their speech in fun and meaningful ways. I frequently post information about CAS and its diagnosis on my Facebook business page to inform parents
I have provided both picture exchange and aided language stimulation boards for children with CAS as an alternative to speech so that they may continue to grow in their expressive language development and to give them a way to communicate early on in the treatment process while we work on attaining more intelligible speech.
