Initially with treatment, I begin with a pairing process to promote compliance and acceptance to treatment. I will incorporate behavioral principles of learning specifically non-contingent and contingent levels of reinforcement in order to promote compliance with novel targets and continued success with mastered targets. I create a mastered target collection from which I incorporate into therapy for success and ultimately to encourage self-esteem for the client, particularly when novel targets of increased complexity and difficulty are introduced. I begin with creating an inventory of mastered, novel, and stimulable targets from which I select teaching targets. I encourage input from the family so as to include personally relevant information for target selection. I use commercially available products such as Kaufman Kits, K to K vocabulary and Verbs, as well as many handmade products.
I have worked with clients with apraxia for several years now. I have donated to this organization as a Gold level sponsor for the walk and am in the process of putting together a team to attend the local walk event. I am interested in continuing to sponsor and become more involved in this community.
Parents attend sessions, are able to record treatment in progress, and are provided weekly "homework" including targets as well as strategies to promote novel and continued success with mastered targets in their child's daily environment. Within treatment sessions, parents are asked to implement therapy targets so I may observe and provide feedback on their performance to endure consistently with treatment and methodology. Specifically this includes instruction on errorless learning as well as implementation of backward chaining.
AAC has been historically incoprorated into therapy as needed for children with decreased vocal output. However use of differential reinforcement applied so as to improve frequency of overal vocal expression. The majority of clients I have worked with have used AAC as a means of pragmatic use within sessions.
