I am trained in both PROMPT and the Kaufman program. I often use the Kaufman program with the younger children as I like the colorful pictures and the home program materials. I involve parents in every session so they can learn the cues, sounds etc. and so they can assist with daily practice at home. I will also introduce some basic signs or picture communication to provide the child with a means to communicate if they are experiencing frustration. I usually pair sounds with gestures, visual, and tactile cues to provide additional multi-sensory support (sometimes it's SEE signs, visual phonics, or whatever type of cue that child can connect with and relate to). If the child is older and comfortable, I will use some PROMPT to help establish motor movements and placements.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to observe and participate in each therapy session so they develop an understanding of the treatment hierarchy, target sounds/word approximations, and multi-sensory cues needed to support their child's speech. I always want the child to use their targets in meaningful ways and it is helpful to have parents in the session as it increases opportunities for mass practice as well as supports the parent and child in being able to generalize targets to other environments beyond the clinic. Having parents involved in the session is also helpful so they can provide feedback on what has been easy/difficult at home so I can provide additional support and offer alternatives to reduce frustration.
