I use a family-centred approach to ensure the therapy goals and the intervention plan align with the family’s values. Sessions are personalized, incorporating multi-sensory cues to support production of the speech target. Depending on the child's needs, I may use treatment approaches such as Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), PROMPTs for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets, or ReST (Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment). I thoughtfully apply principles of motor learning to help the child acquire and generalize new speech skills. From the outset of therapy, I will consider how to incorporate total communication, including augmentative and alternative communication strategies to support a child’s ability to communicate functionally and effectively.
Parents play an important role in the therapeutic process and are encouraged to be as involved as possible. They attend all sessions in full or in part, depending on the individual needs of the child. Parents will be involved in the goal writing process, and required to support their child during daily home practice. During therapy sessions, parents will some learn cues and prompt to help their child produce the targets outside the clinical environment.
Depending on the needs of the child and family, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) options may be considered and/or implemented. This may include easy-access AAC (e.g. picture boards), or high tech options (e.g. robust speech generating devices such as TouchChat or LAMP). Referrals can be made to the local Assistive Technology team if needed. AAC is used in conjunction with speech practice to support a child’s total communication.
