In therapy sessions, I incorporate crafts, hands-on games, such as playing with cars, water or building things! I also play outside when I can and use a lot of gross motor movement. I often collaborate with an occupational therapist on how to best support kids in their sessions. I like to ensure that the target words are meaningful and related to really motivating activities for each child. We work together to identify our targets and build them into activities and games that are super engaging.
First, I work together with parents to find the most impactful target words that work with the child's goals. Parents jump in during sessions to help keep count of practice words and trails; they take turns within sessions for the cueing and modelling the target words; most importantly, we celebrate together!
AAC is available in every room at our clinic, both low-tech and high-tech options. We can provide copies to use at home and work with the child and family to identify the best system for them and connect with their school or day care team to support carryover.
