Overcoming Apraxia: Finding My Voice & Overcoming Obstacles

Hello! My name is Saida Mahoney. I am 27 years old, and I have Apraxia. I also have Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, Cerebral Palsy (CP), Neuromuscular Diseases (NMD), Tourette Syndrome, Mild intellectual disability, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) and other chronic medical conditions and disabilities.

Growing up I didn’t know how to talk at all, and I was delayed in everything. I was completely nonverbal, but I was always babbling and using sign language every time my mother would talk to me. I had no way to communicate with her using my words.

I went through numerous speech language pathologists and none of them understood me.  So, my mother researched and found someone else. My mother told my new speech therapist about how I was born with my extremely rare genetic disease called Partial Trisomy 8q Duplication Syndrome (for short: Partial Trisomy 8q) and how it had a huge impact on me.

When I turned 5-years-old, I was able to talk to my mother. As I got older, I continued to receive help and care, but still had lots of communication and language challenges. I also dealt with stuttering due to my genetic disease and other chronic conditions.

Fast forward to myself now, and I am receiving better help! Plus, I enjoy so many things in life like traveling, camping, concerts, shopping, listening to music, and more!

On top of that, my days are busy!  I am a Podcaster, I am a Beauty Pageant Queen, Performing Artist, College Student, Writer, Author, National Disability Advocate and Activist, National Rare Disease Advocate and Activist and so much more etc. Its lots of hard work, but I learned how to advocate for, not only myself, but also so many other people who are living with Apraxia and many other chronic conditions. I am thankful I was able to get the help I needed, and I want to help others by giving back to those who are struggling.

I am proud to be the woman I am today, and I learned so much from my mother. She helped me get through everything with exceptional strength and determination. I am here to support everyone who has Apraxia and other disabilities and chronic medical conditions. Please know you are not alone.
