Testimonials of HOPE
Many people contact Apraxia Kids on a regular basis to share their stories of struggles, accomplishments, or a brief glimpse into their apraxia journey. Below are some testimonials of HOPE submitted by community members in 2023. We appreciate these individuals sharing their brief, but powerful messages as they are still relatable today.
We promise – you will be inspired!
“It started at the age of three, when my mom found out by Dave Hammer, that her daughter has CAS. I couldn’t even say mom and dad. All my life – I had speech therapy. I only had one speech therapist that helped me out because of how rare CAS is. Now I’m 26 years old – I can actually carry a full-on conversation. And I’m a Nursing Assistant working at UPMC. I achieve my goals in life. I had dreams of being a famous writer and tell my story to influence kids that was like me. To never give up hope. No matter the struggles we had to come by. It gets better.” ~Deanna, U.S.A.
“I am an 8th grade student athlete with apraxia of speech. I started elementary with home speech therapy and in school speech therapy. As a family, my mother and I read over the things that everyone said I wouldn’t be able to accomplish. Basketball has always been my outlet. Now I’m a student athlete excelling at the top of my class and I am one of the top basketball players in the 2027 class. I would like to share my story with other Apraxia kids and let them know ANY and EVERYTHING is possible!!!” ~Hakeem, U.S.A.
“My apraxia warrior was diagnosed almost three years ago, he was nonverbal and we were desperate and in the middle of a global pandemic. By chance I found our miracle on apraxiakids.com, and an SLP locally that agreed to treat my son in person when no other SLP would. Now my five-year-old son tells me “I’m busy”, when he doesn’t want to take his bath, I literally have caught myself telling him to be quiet then gasping and fighting back tears because just a few years ago we were learning sign language thinking he would never speak. We still have a very long road ahead of us, but we have so much hope because we see he has so much fight, and as long as he is fighting then so is his mamma!” ~Erin, U.S.A.
“My son Callan is 7 years old and diagnosed with CAS and ASD. He’s been in speech therapy for 5 years. He was totally nonverbal until 5 years old, we were told on several occasions that he would never speak. He used an AAC device from 4-6 years old and was very good with it. At 5, Callan started making individual letter sounds but couldn’t combine the consonants and vowel sounds to produce words. After another 18 months of apraxia specific speech therapy, Callan started verbally speaking individual words at 6.5 years old! 6 months later he is speaking in short sentences and getting better with verbal communication every day. I still cry every time he says “mommy”, we are so thrilled to finally hear our sweet boy’s voice.” ~Julie, U.S.A.
“Our son Carter was diagnosed with apraxia at the age of three. We had him tested around age two and were told he would likely be fine! But, returned a year later and then very quickly started working with a SLP regularly through a clinic near our house. He is now 9 1/2 and we just got the news today that he did not requalify for speech services! He has had a lengthy journey, has received help both through our clinic between 1-3 times per week since his diagnosis, and the public school district. He has worked so hard, and I would love to showcase our story to highlight a success story! He has come so far, and it is such a thrill to see him succeed! ~Katie, U.S.A.
