Apraxia Kids is very aware of the struggles so many of our families endure trying to obtain insurance coverage for their child’s intensive speech therapy sessions. To discover some of the barriers to adequate insurance coverage, over 200 parents from the apraxia community completed a survey to describe their difficulties. Over 80% of those surveyed said they had been negatively affected by a lack of insurance coverage for their child’s apraxia diagnosis. The reasons were varied – denied claims, high out of pocket costs, inadequate number of sessions covered under a cap, and more.
Apraxia Kids is committed to helping families obtain better coverage from insurance companies. We have an Insurance Advocacy Guide to help families work with their employer and insurance company to obtain appropriate coverage for speech therapy by providing information, tools, letter templates, and resources. Watch for more information in 2025 as Apraxia Kids has dedicated resources to developing further tools for advocating for change to insurance laws around speech therapy coverage for CAS.
