Dynamic Star Duos – Celebrate Friendship Month

Making friends is an important part of growing up. We know from research and anecdotal stories from parents and individuals with apraxia that children with childhood apraxia of speech often struggle with social interactions due to their speech not being understood. They can be reluctant to initiate conversations in a group of their peers due to previous communication failures or teasing about their speech. In addition, many children with CAS have not ever met another child with apraxia and feel very alone in their struggles.

Apraxia Kids wanted to create a place where children can connect, share and have FUN together so we introduced Dynamic Star Duos, a monthly virtual support group for children ages 6-12. Parents are invited to join to help with any communication breakdowns and to help their child stay engaged as needed. Apraxia Stars and their parents are able to join from all over the world which is invaluable.

Next meeting: Sunday September 27, 2026 at 5:30 pm Eastern.  Sign up here to receive the zoom link for Dynamic Star Duos: https://www.apraxia-kids.org/how-to-help/live-support-groups/

Message from a mom:

Apraxia kids dynamic stars duo is a fantastic group ran monthly by amazing leaders from the Apraxia Kids organisation. My daughter loves the interactions she has with the leaders and other Apraxia Stars. My daughter loves the interactive games and fun topics of discussion that changes each month. My daughter has been joining via zoom for the monthly meets for just over a year now and really enjoys being able to interact with both the leaders and other kids with apraxia knowing she is not alone. The leaders are very patient and understanding and involve the kids with fun games and discussions, with no pressure. The kids can participate as much or as little as they like and the parents are welcome to join in to help their little person communicate where needed.

Kids connect globally and it’s great for them to share things about themselves and learn from others interests and cultures.

Message from an apraxia star:

I like playing the games and being able to interact with other kids with Apraxia. I am 9 years old, from Australia and it is lots of fun joining in with other kids from around the world with Apraxia. The leaders who run the meet up are very kind and understanding and very patient listening to both my words and my “accent”.

I love waking up early each month to log onto zoom for the Apraxia stars meet up.

Message from another mom:

“Apraxia Kids Dynamic Star Duos is a wonderfully warm, welcoming and inclusive program. The speech pathologists are dedicated, patient and genuinely attentive to every child, making sure each child feels comfortable, valued and included.

What I appreciate most is the sense of connection it creates. Childhood apraxia of speech is uncommon, and many families do not personally know other children with the same diagnosis. This can make the diagnosis feel even more isolating. My child longs to meet other children who experience similar communication challenges, and this group gives him that valuable opportunity.

Because the sessions are held each month, the children build relationships with the same children and speech pathologists over time. This familiarity helps them feel more confident, connected and understood.

The group is also a wonderful source of support for parents. The parent breakout rooms provide opportunities to learn from the speech pathologists, share experiences with other families and gain helpful ideas and information.

Best of all, the sessions can be joined from the comfort of your own living room, making them accessible and extremely convenient for busy families. This is a very special program that supports not only children with apraxia, but their parents and families as well.”
