Apraxia Kids: What are the top 3 things you learned from this training experience?
Maggie:
1. Boot camp gave me the knowledge and confidence to implement ReST for the first time through my case study, and I’m excited to continue incorporating it into my practice.
2. I deepened my skills in using IPA more consistently and accurately, including diacritics, which has sharpened my clinical analysis and documentation.
3. I expanded my thinking around how to choose treatment targets and measure progress, especially for younger and more severe clients, exploring tools like SPU/SCU, IPC, and probe data to paint a fuller picture of each child’s growth.
Apraxia Kids: How did the boot camp experience change or expand your network of colleagues/friends?
Maggie: Boot camp connected me with some of the most knowledgeable and passionate professionals in our field. We keep in touch via WhatsApp and group texts. I love knowing I can reach out to any of these incredibly talented women to brainstorm and keep growing. We are all striving to do our very best for every family we serve.
Apraxia Kids: Describe how you have implemented the knowledge you gained at boot camp.
Maggie: I’ve been able to expand and refine my dynamic assessment toolbox. I’ve deepened my implementation of DTTC and gained the confidence to try treatment approaches I had previously hesitated to explore. The training pushed me to grow in ways that have directly improved the care I provide to my clients.
Apraxia Kids: What is an example of how you have been able to (or plan to) use your expertise as a local resource/support for other professionals and/or families since attending the intensive training?
Maggie: One of my favorite parts of this experience was being able to bring back a wealth of knowledge and resources to share with others. I’ve been able to support my team, mentor graduate student clinicians, and serve as a resource for the local apraxia communities in both Jacksonville and Coral Springs.
Apraxia Kids: What would you say to someone considering applying to boot camp next round?
Maggie: Do it! It will not be easy, but it will be so worth it. Boot camp has been the greatest professional experience of my career, and I genuinely wish this kind of intensive training existed for every area of speech-language pathology. Good luck!
