Apraxia Kids: What are the top 3 things you learned from this training experience?
Lindsay: Differential diagnosis, how to fully analyze a child’s speech samples using IPC and looking at the full child- especially in terms of their literacy skills, feelings towards their speech and their level of participation in their environment.
Apraxia Kids: How did the boot camp experience change or expand your network of colleagues/friends?
Lindsay: Everyone from our cohort communicates in our WhatsApp group message. This has been very helpful for answering different questions we have after returning from boot camp and implementing everything we learned with our caseload.
Apraxia Kids: Describe how you have implemented the knowledge you gained at boot camp.
Lindsay: I feel much more confident in my differential diagnosis and treatment target selection. After returning from Bootcamp, I evaluated new clients and re-evaluated my current caseload using the different informal assessment materials we learned about (ProCAD, SRT, IPC, etc). Utilizing the IPC has really been a game changer and has helped me to further analyze their current language samples and choose appropriate treatment targets.
Apraxia Kids: What is an example of how you have been able to (or plan to) use your expertise as a local resource/support for other professionals and/or families since attending the intensive training?
Lindsay: I’ve been mentoring my two friends who are SLPs. I’ve also hired an SLP and have been mentoring her so we can expand the amount of children in our local area get appropriate treatment for CAS.
Apraxia Kids: What would you say to someone considering applying to boot camp next round?
Lindsay: Boot Camp was the most intense training I’ve ever attended as an SLP. It is a game changer for treating and diagnosing CAS. I’m so appreciative that I was selected to attend the training and have gained so much confidence in my ability to treat CAS thanks to Boot Camp.
