Congratulations to Carol M Rodriguez Pagan, MS, CCC-SLP, for graduating from the Apraxia Kids Intensive Training Institute (Apraxia Boot Camp)!

Having just graduated from the University, I had decided in which area I wanted to specialize, but God had other plans for me and the arrival of a special patient made me make a 180-degree turn and change my direction towards specializing in Childhood Apraxia of Speech. In 2017 I decided to start my corporation ArtikPro where we offer specialized services in Apraxia of Speech, speech and language therapy and feeding in Bayamón, Puerto Rico.

Carol offers services in Spanish in Bayamón, Puerto Rico.

Apraxia Kids: What are the top 3 things you learned from this training experience?
Carol: Related to the assessment area, I was able to have a deeper learning regarding dynamic motor assessment.  In the treatment area I feel more confident when deciding the target words to work on and implementing the principles of motor learning when working with DTTC. I have learned the probe data is a specific way to track and show progress in my patients.

Apraxia Kids: How did the boot camp experience change or expand your network of colleagues/friends?
Carol: I have met many SLPs with the same interest in CAS from across the US and other international places.

Apraxia Kids: How have you implemented the knowledge you gained at boot camp?
Carol: As soon as I returned from the boot camp, I made changes to the assessment report, integrating all the learning I acquired and started to implement the probe date with all my Apraxia patients.

Apraxia Kids: What is an example of how you have been able to (or plan to) use your expertise as a local resource/support for other professionals and/or families since attending the intensive training?
Carol: My goal is to continue guiding the community and my colleagues regarding Apraxia of Speech and the importance of carrying out the processes appropriately and correctly, and to continue offering trainings to our colleagues. I hope one day be able to present at the apraxia convention and to be able to conduct research in Puerto Rico.

Apraxia Kids: What would you say to someone considering applying to boot camp next round?
Carol: I have taken many courses aimed at Apraxia, but the Boot Camp exceeded my expectations. I’m going to be honest, it is hard work that requires time and organization. But it’s worth 200%.
