14 Aug Boot Camp: What’s That?
You might have heard of the “Apraxia Kids Boot Camp” and thought, “What’s that?” or maybe you have seen the gold stars while browsing the Apraxia Kids SLP Directory. This blog will go into details to explain exactly WHAT our Boot Camp is and WHY it’s important!
Apraxia Kids Boot Camp is an intensive, advanced training program designed to strategically identify and intensively train qualified speech-language pathologists in order to boost their clinical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS).
In order to be selected to attend Apraxia Kids Boot Camp, SLPs must apply and be accepted. These SLPs must be listed in the SLP Directory (a free resource for both families and professionals!), have a minimum of 5 years of clinical experience post graduate school, and have treated at least five children with CAS. We also specifically look for SLPs who already have strong foundational training so that they already know what CAS is and some ways to assess, diagnose, and treat children. These SLPs are looking to advance their current level of training and expertise.
Once Boot Campers are selected, they have pre-reading assignments of current literature and research prior to attending a week-long in-person intense training session (12 hour days!) hosted in Pittsburgh, PA at Duquesne University who partners with us. Every day was filled with learning opportunities, working on case studies to apply newly learned knowledge, and time to connect with our six instructors and fellow Boot Campers. We even ended our week with an Apraxia Star and families as guests!
The fun doesn’t stop when our Boot Campers go home; they still have a LOT of work to do with their own personal case study to complete with their mentor’s guidance. One of the unique opportunities with our Boot Camp is that we offer a six month mentorship following training where our campers can receive feedback on their case studies!
To date we have had over 170 SLPs complete our Apraxia Kids Boot Camp successfully throughout the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, and soon to be Italy!
Congratulations to all of our SLPs who have taken the initiative to join us at Boot Camp and thank you to our generous community for supporting Apraxia Kids so that we can support programs like our Boot Camp. It is truly impossible to know how many Apraxia Stars are positively affected by the knowledge learned through our Boot Camp program, but the ripple effect is ongoing! Our group of boot campers continue to be involved with Apraxia Kids by supporting our programs like sponsoring or coordinating Walk for Apraxia events, speaking and SLP-Is-In Booth at our National Conference, recording “You Asked, We Answered” videos, as well as teaching others within their communities what they have learned, and more!
