Do Fish Oils Help Children with Apraxia?

Do Fish Oils Help Children with Apraxia?

For several decades, families and others have been hearing anecdotal reports of nutritional supplements that allegedly benefit children with apraxia of speech. After extensive investigation, we have determined that no scientific evidence exists to document any such benefit. However, we have heard of individual stories from families who feel that supplementation with various nutrients, in particular essential fatty acids (Omega 3’s), seemed to help their child’s speech attempts. We have also heard stories from families who report no effect at all from such supplementation, as well as reports of negative effects.

We are aware that various websites make claims, but unfortunately, if a website states that research proves fish oil, essential fatty acids, or Omega 3’s are effective in treating childhood apraxia of speech, then their statements are false.

Parents should thoroughly research all supplements they intend to give to a child as well as consult with medical professionals who know the child. If and when credible scientific data becomes available, you can count on it to be here.  Until then, the sources below provide reliable and trustworthy information on dietary supplements and research:

Omega-3 Supplements: In Depth, from the NIH, National Institute on Complementary and Integrative Health

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Maternal and Child Health: An Updated Systematic Review, from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (US); 2016 Oct.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Fact Sheet for Health Professionals, from the NIH, Office of Dietary Supplements

Omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil, alpha-linolenic acid, from the Mayo Clinic
