Amber Pinskey: Vice Chair of the Apraxia Kids Board

What brought you to Apraxia Kids?

Several years ago, when I saw that the Apraxia Kids board of directors was looking for a CPA, I viewed it as an opportunity to use my skills to give back to the community. I never expected Apraxia Kids to have such a profound impact on my life.  My involvement on the Apraxia Kids board of directors over the last 4 ½ years has taught me how to be the voice for my child who is too young to advocate for herself and how to face resistance head-on (and to not take “no” for an answer).

What is the biggest impact Apraxia Kids has had on your life?

If I had to choose one word to describe the impact Apraxia Kids has had on me, I would say “inspiring.” It has been extremely inspiring to see the resilience of the apraxia community through:

  • the relentless dedication of the SLPs and professionals,
  • the unwavering commitment of the apraxia parents and families to do whatever it takes to have their children’s voices be heard, and
  • Last, but certainly not least, the perseverance of the apraxia stars to overcome the challenges they face daily.

Do you have a personal connection to apraxia?

While I do not have a personal connection to apraxia, I do know what it is like to be a parent of a child who struggles to complete everyday tasks that come easy to her peers.  I understand the frustration and helplessness that comes with it, and the desperation you feel to give your child a normal life.

How has your contribution made an impact on the apraxia community?

As I continue to serve on the Apraxia Kids board of directors, I am committed to providing support and awareness for apraxia speech. We won’t stop until every child’s voice is heard.
