A life of hope moments – Justin C. Greene

Justin Greene is a 53-year-old adult with apraxia of speech and has been an active advocate for speech disabilities for a long time.  He loves to share stories about his life, and how he continues to navigate apraxia with self-love, self-acceptance, and a positive attitude.

“I was made fun of more times than you can imagine, but when I look back at my life, I don’t think about that, I rather think about the times people were kind.”

When learning more about Justin’s journey with apraxia, Justin had so many moments to reflect on, but he shared about a time in 8th grade when his teacher knew he struggled profusely with reading.  This teacher did not make him read out loud in class, but that encouraged him later in life to reach this goal.

“I said to myself that I wanted to do better. I want to read. So, I did speech therapy when I was in my 30s, and also my late 40s. And I was able to go back to [my old elementary school] and read for them [the students] in the community read-a-thon day. And [my friend] is an artist and loves to make drawings.  She had a severe stuttering problem as a child and together we teamed up! And now teachers request us to read for them and that’s the coolest thing ever! We put a lot of effort into it and having the teachers request us, and the kids getting so excited and writing to us, that’s just as good as it gets!”

The journey with apraxia of speech can often trigger anxiety over many different hurdles along the way.  One frequent worry is bullying.

Justin has so many positive things to offer!  He ultimately hopes his messages help children and families, so children don’t have to face what he did at such a young age.  When you are having a rough day, make sure you think of Justin and his words of wisdom!
