Every child benefits from a custom-made treatment plan. I use my knowledge about the "principles of motor learning" and skills from different training experiences to provide intervention in a dynamic and effective way. I use evidence-based CAS treatment approaches like DTTC, ReST, and ultrasound visual biofeedback in my everyday practice. I also have formal training in "Let's Talk Clearly" (developed by Dr. Megan Hodge) and PROMPT, and have completed "CAS Advanced Competence Training" (intensive training offered through Apraxia Kids in collaboration with Alberta Health Services). I stay up to date on new research and best practices by attending the Apraxia Kids national conference annually. Intensive CAS therapy requires a lot of attention and hard work from the clinician, family, and the child. I find fun and meaningful ways to practice speech with children (like choosing functional goals and exciting activities) so that they are motivated to practice and have a positive experience with speech therapy.
I engage parents in all aspects of therapy - determining goals or targets, choosing fun and meaningful activities for speech practice, and finding practical ways to work at home. Parent participation in each treatment session and consistent home practice is key to maximizing success. By building their knowledge and skills, parents gain the confidence and capacity to support their child's communication in any situation.
I have experience using high-tech AAC (e.g., iPad apps such as LAMP Words for Life, TouchChat), low-tech AAC (e.g., picture boards or books), and sign language with children who have CAS or other speech disorders. I use American Sign Language on a regular basis and am very comfortable incorporating it into therapy and coaching others.
