I provide relationship-centered, client-led, neurodiversity-affirming CAS therapy. I view connection, regulation, and intrinsic motivation as foundations to effective CAS therapy. I use evidence-based intervention methods to support my clients with motor planning and programming for speech. I support autonomy by encouraging my clients/caregivers to help choose our target words and activities. I support individuals to communicate in whichever modality feels easiest and/or most efficient in a given moment (whether that means using verbal speech, high tech speech generating devices, ASL, whiteboards, typing, etc.). I recognize the impact that CAS can have on language, literacy, confidence, and social communication, so I support these areas as well. A session with me might look like doing an activity chosen by the client, practicing a small set of words, focusing on the movement through the word rather than specific sounds, giving specific feedback, fading feedback to promote carryover of skills, and including caregivers in the practice. All the while, I am giving access/modeling alternative forms of communication and staying in tune with my client’s energy/motivation levels.
