For younger children, speech therapy is play based and focuses on on the skills required for the child to start communicating verbally. We will be using toys and games and the child's preferred activities to encourage them to make sounds.
Once children are saying a variety of sounds, speech therapy still involves games and toys but becomes more demanding as we require many repetitions of sounds, words and phrases to solidify the motor plans for those skills. The clinician will help your child with a variety of cues including verbal, visual, and physical supports to help them say what they want to say.
Last but not least, children who are older and more advanced may benefit from an approach called ReST, where we work on learning nonwords (words that do not have a real meaning) to encourage generalization of the necessary motor movements for real speech.
Parents are expected to attend every session so that they can know what to work on at home and how to help cue their child to achieve accurate and frequent repetitions of the homework target at home.
I will often use TouchChat or TDSnap (both apps on an iPad) to support children with what they are trying to say.
