In my therapy for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), I focus on helping your child learn how to plan and coordinate the movements needed for clear speech. I work with a small set of meaningful words and practice them many times using structured, motor-based strategies like repetition, cueing, and carefully varied practice to support learning and carryover. My goal is not just correct production in the moment, but helping your child build strong, stable speech movement patterns they can use in everyday communication.
Parents are an essential part of the therapy process. I make sure you understand exactly what we are working on so you can support practice at home in a simple, realistic way. I’ll show you how to model target words, how to use the same cueing strategies we use in sessions, and how to keep practice short, frequent, and successful. I also involve you in choosing functional words that matter to your child’s daily life, and I provide feedback so you feel confident supporting carryover outside of therapy.
For children with CAS, I often introduce AAC early to support communication while speech is developing. This can include low-tech supports like picture boards or communication books, as well as high-tech speech-generating devices when appropriate. AAC gives your child a reliable way to express wants and ideas while we continue working on speech skills. It is used alongside speech therapy—not instead of it—so your child always has a voice while we build clearer spoken communication over time.
