Initial therapy for a child with CAS will include choosing a few target words that include sounds and word structures the child can produce as well as some new sounds/word structures. Sessions will focus on practicing these target words accurately. The child will be encouraged to look at the way the SLP is moving her mouth and encouraged to match those movements. There will be lots of practice of these target words, with the SLP giving visual, verbal, and tactile cues to help the child be successful. In between blocks of practice, the child will have short, fun breaks. At specified intervals, we will conduct probes of the target words. If the child is now able to produce the word correctly without cues, we will move this word out to work on generalization (maybe during play or carryover at home) and will add in more words to practice in sessions. If appropriate, we will include AAC in the sessions to help support language and decrease frustration.
