Apraxia Kids: What are the top 3 things you learned from this training experience?
Samantha:

  1. Practice that looks perfect in the moment (due to high repetitions) often doesn’t stick to long-term carryover
  2. Prosody and rhythm are key and should be built into every speech target from the very beginning
  3. Starting with more complex targets/movement patterns can lead to faster overall progress

Apraxia Kids: How did the boot camp experience change or expand your network of colleagues/friends?
Samantha: The support I receive constantly from other colleagues in this niche field has been wonderful. We’ve been able to share resources and gain new perspectives.

Apraxia Kids: Describe how you have implemented the knowledge you gained at boot camp.
Samantha: It has completely changed my ability to dissect and map out a client’s assessment and treatment trajectory with full confidence – it has provided me with a massive toolbox of resources and support.

Apraxia Kids: What is an example of how you have been able to (or plan to) use your expertise as a local resource/support for other professionals and/or families since attending the intensive training?
Samantha: I’ve been able to provide support and resources to other local Miami SLPs who are looking for support in this area as well as to connect with my alma mater and provide graduate student training.

Apraxia Kids: What would you say to someone considering applying to boot camp next round?
Samantha: It is in an intensive process but completely worth every minute.
