When working with a child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), my first priority is building a strong, trusting relationship with both the child and their family. Helping your child feel comfortable and supported in therapy is essential, and I want parents to clearly understand what we are working on, why we are working on it, and how their involvement helps their child make progress.
Therapy is designed to be fun, engaging, and motivating by including your child’s interests. This helps keep them attentive and encourages active participation. Treatment focuses on helping your child learn and practice the movements needed for speech through frequent practice, clear models, and carefully chosen words. This approach supports steady progress and helps children build confidence in their communication skills.
Parents are actively involved in the therapy process, including collaboration in selecting functional therapy targets. Targets are chosen to support the development of necessary speech movement sequences while also prioritizing words and phrases that are meaningful in the child’s daily routines. This family-centered approach promotes carryover, generalization, and meaningful improvements in everyday communication.
High-tech AAC has been used during therapy to support functional communication when a child’s speech sound repertoire is limited. AAC allows the child to express wants and needs while verbal speech continues to develop. Support has also been provided to families in securing funding for a personal speech-generating device and through parent coaching to customize and model the system for use across daily environments.
