Here at Rise & Shine Therapy, LLC, we provide neurodiverse affirming, equitable, innovative, and strengths-based services. We focus on the whole child’s needs through building strong connections and rapport with both the child and their families. We believe collaboration is key to successful learning outcomes. When evaluating and treating Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), we focus on implementation and teaching of the principals of motor learning. This helps your child plan and coordinate the movements needed for talking. We will practice saying words, sounds, and syllables in ways that are functional and meaningful for your child. We use a lot of repetition, multisensory cues, to guide speech movements, gradually helping your child say words more accurately and independently. We also work on rhythm, stress, and timing in speech, because these are often challenging for children with CAS. Sessions are creative, playful, and rooted in relationships/rapport, evidence-based practices, individualized therapy approaches, collaboration, and family-centered inclusion. Our goal is to help your child communicate successfully in everyday situations, not just during therapy to ensure they are given an equal opportunity to communicate and learn.
Parents/guardians are an important part of a child's therapy team. During sessions, I encourage you to watch and participate in activities so you can learn the strategies and cueing methods to practice speech movements and gestures with your child at home/outside of speech therapy. I will show you how to cue your child, give feedback, and set up fun, short practice opportunities at home that match what we do in therapy. I will also give you specific words, phrases, or routines to practice daily. In therapy sessions, I will point out how we check progress so you can see your child’s improvements. Your involvement helps your child generalize skills to real-life situations, like talking with family, friends, or at school, and makes therapy more effective. I will also look to you to help provide meaningful words to your child and family to target in therapy. You will join on the fun and hard work of therapy!
For children with CAS, an AAC (augmentative and alternative communication device) may be used to help your child communicate while they are learning speech. This can include picture cards or communication boards that use key words and pictures that allow your child to point to if they are having difficulty saying a word. This could also include a speech-generating device or application where your child will learn language through touching a button and the device produces an auditory output of the words. We teach your child how to use these tools to express needs, make choices, and participate in activities, while still practicing speech in therapy. AAC is used alongside speech practice, not instead of it, so your child can communicate successfully now while building skills for talking more clearly in the future. Research has proven for AAC to be an effective approach to build language skills, and it has proven that is does not hinder speech development.
