Apraxia Kids: What are the top 3 things you learned from this training experience?

Elizabeth: I gained a further understanding of the most current research, evidence-based methods for differential diagnosis and treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech. I learned additional tools and resources for assessment and intervention which have allowed me to supplement my clinical toolkit. I also strengthened my strategies for goal writing and target selection.

Apraxia Kids: How did the boot camp experience change or expand your network of colleagues/friends?

Elizabeth: Working with such skilled clinicians from across North America was an incredibly powerful experience! Being in groups to analyze case studies and implement learning was such a strong learning opportunity and created lasting connections and opportunities for collaboration. I am thrilled for the community that Apraxia Kids provides even following boot camp to continue to build on the hard work that this bootcamp provided.

Apraxia Kids: Describe how you have implemented the knowledge you gained at boot camp.

Elizabeth: Boot camp changed my sessions immediately! Every time I plan and analyze a therapy session now, I continue to learn so much. There is so much to implement following boot camp not only the information from boot camp itself, but from the perspective gained. I have become a better clinician, and I am motivated to continue my growth.

Apraxia Kids: What is an example of how you have been able to (or plan to) use your expertise as a local resource/support for other professionals and/or families since attending the intensive training?

Elizabeth: Since bootcamp, I was asked to present on CAS at my outpatient clinic which reached about 25 of my SLP, OT, PT, and Music therapy colleagues that work with all ages in my clinic. I continue to collaborate with my colleagues about my DTTC knowledge and work closely to support differential diagnosis of CAS at our clinic. I have had great discussions with SLPs both within my clinic, amongst families I work with and within the community about components of therapy and apraxia of speech.

Apraxia Kids: What would you say to someone considering applying to boot camp next round?

Elizabeth: Seek out this valuable opportunity and know you are going to become a stronger clinician on the other side of this experience. You will have support from a team of mentors and fellow Boot Campers, and you will be happy that you decided to do it!
