CONGRATULATIONS, Sorina Larson, M.S., CCC-SLP!

Sorina Larson, M.S., CCC-SLP, is now a graduate of the Apraxia Kids Intensive Training Institute (Apraxia Boot Camp) and is considered Recognized by Apraxia Kids for Advanced Training and Expertise in Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

Hi! I am Sorina Larson, a research pediatric speech-language pathologist based in Milwaukee, WI. I earned my Master’s degree from Marquette University in 2017, and since then, I have been committed to supporting children from birth to age nine through engaging, evidence-based speech therapy sessions. My approach emphasizes collaboration with parents to ensure continued progress beyond the therapy setting. I have experience working with diverse populations, including children with speech sound disorders, receptive and expressive language delays, pragmatic differences, hearing loss, and autism. My expertise lies in treating childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), employing research-backed methods to achieve meaningful communication outcomes.

Apraxia Kids: What are the top 3 things you learned from this training experience?

Sorina:
*Greater variety of assessment tools, specifically excited about the IPC
*How to more clearly state overall effect of both CAS vs other speech sound disorders on a child’s intelligibility in my reports.
*Greater variety of progress monitoring markers, specifically IPC as a target goal.

Apraxia Kids: How did the boot camp experience change or expand your network of colleagues/friends?

Sorina: I greatly appreciate how this experience brings together SLPs who are just as intrinsically motivated as I am to continue to learn. I had been feeling like I was the only SLP who lit up about CAS in my community, but now I know of so many others around the country! We are able to geek out about all things CAS and really grow our knowledge together.

Apraxia Kids: Describe how you have implemented the knowledge you gained at boot camp.

Sorina: I have already used some of the assessment tools that I learned about during the bootcamp, specifically the IPC, in both evaluation as well as treatment progress monitoring for my clients with CAS.

Apraxia Kids: What is an example of how you have been able to (or plan to) use your expertise as a local resource/support for other professionals and/or families since attending the intensive training?

Sorina: I have shared information gathered from the bootcamp in a presentation for my co-workers. We discussed evaluation, treatment decisions, target selection, progress monitoring… every piece of CAS possible in a short time frame.

Apraxia Kids: What would you say to someone considering applying to boot camp next round?

Sorina: Are you feeling a bit “stuck” with your CAS clients in one way or another? This is the way to learn more about each area of CAS intervention to give you a larger tool box to make greater change in your community.
