My therapeutic approach for children with CAS is highly child-centered and dynamic, meaning that I will adapt to the child’s needs throughout each session. I incorporate a motor-based approach with multisensory cueing using the principles of motor learning. I use a variety of motor-based approaches including Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) using highly functional words and phrases for the child.
Parents are an integral part of the therapy process! Parents know their child best and understand them in a broader context. I communicate regularly with parents to discuss their goals, target words/ phrases, and their child’s preferences.
I’ve regularly incorporated AAC both high tech (e.g., tablet) and low tech (e.g., picture cards) in therapy sessions with CAS. I model the child’s target words and phrases on the AAC device as we are practicing speech motor movements. I also model a variety of sentences using the target words, so the child gets multiple exposure to the words. This aided language stimulation facilitates learning semantic and syntactic structures in addition to the motor-based task of producing the words. I also practice phonological awareness activities on AAC using the spelling feature. I say a target word and ask the child to identify the beginning, middle, or end sound and to manipulate the sounds on the AAC device.
