In therapy for a child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), we focus on helping your child learn how to plan and coordinate the movements needed for clear speech. Sessions are fun and involve practicing sounds and words in different ways, using hands-on activities and sometimes visual or touch cues to support learning. We work slowly and carefully, repeating targets many times to help your child build strong speech skills that will carry over to everyday talking. Your involvement at home is important too, so I’ll guide you on ways to support your child’s progress between sessions.
Parents play a vital role in their child’s therapy journey. During sessions, I explain what we are working on and why, so you understand the goals and strategies. I provide you with specific activities and practice ideas to do at home that reinforce what your child learns in therapy. Regular communication is important—I welcome your questions and updates about how your child is doing outside of sessions. Together, we create a team focused on helping your child make the best possible progress.
For children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech, I use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools to support their ability to communicate while they are learning to speak. This can include low-tech options like picture boards or communication books, as well as high-tech devices like speech-generating apps or tablets. AAC helps reduce frustration, encourages language development, and is introduced early to support communication alongside speech therapy—not to replace speech, but to give your child a voice while their speech skills grow.
