My therapy sessions are client and family-centered. When I first meet a family, I ask parents to talk me through their daily routines (e.g., what does mealtime look like?), their child's likes/dislikes, and their goals for therapy. When working with older children, I ask the child to answer as many of these questions as possible for themselves. I ask parents at each session what external factors may impact their child's progress that day (e.g., did the child sleep well?). After determining the child's phonetic inventory and syllable shapes, I work with the parents and child to determine what meaningful and functional words will be targeted in therapy. Therapy will involve principles of motor learning (e.g., frequent practice, varying forms of imitation) and multisensory cueing (e.g., visual cues, tactile cues, verbal cues).
Parents are integral to the therapy process. The best experts on the child I am working with are their parents, and I welcome parental feedback. I encourage parents to share their child's wins as well as difficult moments they are having with their communication at home. I select target words for therapy in collaboration with parents to ensure that the words will actually be meaningful and functional in the child's life.
I am an advocate for multiple forms of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to maximize children's participation and independence. I implement sign language, low-tech AAC (e.g., core/fringe vocabulary boards, visual schedules, sentence strips), and high-tech AAC (e.g., speech-generating devices). I have specific expertise with the following high-tech AAC software programs: LAMP, TouchChat, GoTalk, and TD Snap.
