Evaluation for Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) begins with a comprehensive assessment, including dynamic tasks and a careful differential diagnosis.
If evaluation results indicate characteristics of CAS, treatment incorporates the principles of motor learning which involves the following; frequent, structured practice with lots of repetition, gradually increasing difficulty, using multisensory cues. Throughout treatment, I provide feedback to improve accuracy and production of target sounds and adjust feedback as warranted to promote self-monitoring and generalization. Target words are chosen in collaboration with patients and their caregivers and are functional, meaningful, motivational and impactful.
My speech therapy sessions are patient-centered, neurodiversity affirming, and evidence based. I strive to make every session motivating and engaging, encouraging active participation to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Caregivers play an active role throughout both the evaluation and treatment process. I provide thorough education to ensure caregivers understand the purpose and goals of each activity. Together with patients, caregivers help select target words that are functional, meaningful, and motivating, supporting better carryover and generalization. When appropriate, home practice activities are provided to reinforce skills between sessions.
I incorporate AAC when appropriate and beneficial for my patients. This may include the use of symbol cards, sign language, or speech-generating devices to reduce frustration and enhance participation in communication across a variety of settings, including with peers, family members, and within the broader community.
