I use best practice for CAS treatment, which includes Dynamic Temporal Tactile Cueing (DTTC) and consideration of the principles motor learning. I am also PROMPT trained. My therapy is play based and efficient. I use motivating rewards for children while making sure that they get a lot of practice in each session. Earlier sessions will start with more play / rapport building to make sure your child is comfortable with me. Then, we'll move on to more targeted apraxia therapy. I will always ask for your suggestions and input regarding words and movement patterns to target.
I always ask for a parents input regarding functional words to work on. Therapy may or may not involve a parent watching. If it is best for a parent to leave the room, then I use an app called "seesaw" so that I can upload short session videos for parents to view. Once a child is ready, I will start to give words to practice at home as well! Sometimes this involves a "word of the week" and other times it may involve coloring pages or worksheets!
AAC is an excellent tool for children who have just started speech therapy and aren't ready to fully communicate verbally. Low tech options may involve a communication book with pictures of items a child uses frequently at home. I have made low tech communication books myself and have trained parents on how to use them. I also have had several clients with CAS who have high tech AAC, such as on a speech generating device. I have always incorporating training on the AAC device in my sessions and shown caregivers functional ways to use it at home. Once a child is speaking more, I will help them use an AAC device for more "communication repairs" in which they only use the device when a word or sentence they say is not understood.
