My goal is to make sure all children I work with develop a safe, efficient, and effective way to communicate functionally. It is important that the child is engaged and motivated to learn as well as has successful attempts at communicating. This means that I find motivators that will make the child attempt forms of communication (be it gestures, ASL, picture icons, AAC, verbal approximations, etc.) that may be difficult at first but becomes easier given my support. This also means that I accept any forms of approximations even if the target word is not it's adult form. That is, I work within the child's comfort zone but provide additional support using direct models, gestures, visual aids, etc. so that we can progress to functional communication. It is important to also target consistency. Children with sCAS have had difficulties getting their message across and I will assist in making that message be heard. This may mean that the child and I will imitate a target word simultaneously and then I fade my support over time so that they can produce functional words and communicate effectively spontaneously.
I am a huge proponent of making sure that the parents are involved throughout the therapy process. I like to provide parent education during and after sessions to discuss ways that goals can be targeted outside of therapy. I always tell parents that their support is needed for carryover to the child's everyday lives. Sometimes I provide handouts or emails with additional information. I am available to discuss any questions or concerns with parents to make sure that their child's communication needs are met. I also like to model ways to target the goals we are working on within the session and then discuss what I did and ways that such goals can be targeted at home. We also encourage implementing a favorites list to include the child's family, friends, favorite toys, etc. that are unique to them.
I love using visual aids in the form of low-tech AAC to assist with both comprehension and expression of language. I make sure that if a child has a high-tech AAC device, that it be used across settings so that the child is exposed to core and fringe vocabulary words just like they would be for verbal communication.
