My therapy sessions for a child with CAS focus on helping each child improve their ability to plan and coordinate the movements needed for clear speech. Using evidence-based treatment methods grounded in current research and the Principles of Motor Learning (PML), I work closely with both the child and their parents to create individualized treatment plans that best meet their needs. I target motor speech skills through fun, interactive activities tailored to each child’s interests. My goal is to create a supportive and positive environment where the child feels motivated to participate and make meaningful progress.
Parents are key partners in their child’s therapy for apraxia. They provide essential insights that help guide the selection of target words, ensuring therapy is tailored to their child’s specific needs. I work closely with parents to explain what apraxia is, how therapy works, and provide specific feedback and strategies to support their child’s progress. This collaboration helps parents understand the treatment plan, advocate effectively for their child, and support carryover at home. Regular updates and feedback keep parents informed and actively involved in their child’s development.
I utilize augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for children with CAS to support their communication while continuing to target verbal speech production. Using a total communication approach, I integrate AAC strategies to provide alternative means of expression, which may help reduce frustration and encourage positive communication attempts. This approach fosters independence, empowers children to express themselves, and reinforces their verbal speech.
