28 May Creating Community Connections – Boot Camp
Anne Hodits is a speech-language pathologist located in Illinois. She participated in the Apraxia Kids Boot Camp in 2018. Intensive Training (Apraxia Kids Boot Camp) offered by Apraxia Kids, is an in-depth, in-person learning experience to take your knowledge of childhood apraxia of speech to the next level.
When did you first hear about Boot Camp/What made you apply?
I first learned about Boot Camp at the Apraxia Kids Conference in 2013. After attending sessions led by experts in speech motor therapy—such as Dave Hammer and Sue Caspari—I felt inspired to pursue further training in Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Over the next several years, I focused on refining my motor speech therapy skills, understanding the research, and reading resources by well-known authors like Edythe Strand and Dee Fish. I also completed numerous continuing education courses, including those offered by Apraxia Kids, to deepen my knowledge and understanding. By 2017, I felt confident and prepared to take the next step. I applied to Boot Camp and was accepted into the 2018 class.
What has been the most impactful connection you have either made through Apraxia Kids?
The entire experience allowed me to connect with incredible SLPs from across the United States and Canada who shared a passion for deepening their understanding of Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Through Boot Camp, I built a network of professionals and friends I can turn to for collaboration, discussion of case studies, updates on current research, and ongoing clinical growth. I continue to stay in touch with my mentors from Apraxia Kids and remain deeply grateful for their guidance, which has played an important role in shaping me into the clinician I am today.
Why do you feel it is important to connect with Apraxia Kids / give back to the Apraxia Kids community?
Apraxia Kids has had a profound impact on my career—from being recognized as a Boot Camp Graduate on their website to being featured as a CAS specialist and highlighting my business. These opportunities have also deepened my connection to a cause I care deeply about. I feel strongly about giving back and supporting the organization in any way I can. At the end of the day, it’s all about supporting the children and families who turn to Apraxia Kids—meeting them where they are in their journey. I’m committed to continuing to raise awareness of Childhood Apraxia of Speech and promoting the resources the organization provides.
What does Creating Community Connections mean to you?
Creating Community Connections means building a support system of individuals who are united by a shared purpose and a willingness to guide and uplift one another. I enjoy meeting new people and discovering the ways in which we’re connected—it’s a nice reminder that we’re not alone. Having a community to turn to, count on, and grow with is so important, especially when we’re working toward the same cause.
