02 May Everyone Deserves Respect & a Voice – by: Gus Perdikakis

When I was born, I was delayed, but I have come a long way.
Due to apraxia of speech, I had to attend speech therapy all my life. Growing up, I was bullied and told I wouldn’t graduate or go to college. It was and is frustrating when people do not listen to me, tell me how to speak, or tell me to speak slowly.
I cannot stress this enough – don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do anything. I feel people CAN do anything by putting their mind to it and working hard. Don’t give up. I feel everyone deserves to have a voice, to be heard, and to be treated with respect. We all deserve a fair chance.
Celebrate your uniqueness! My personal goal – to book more jobs and build my resume as an actor. I once met Liza Minnelli. What an inspiration! She reminded me to keep working hard and not to let anyone tell me that I can’t do something.
In an interview, Gus shared more insight about his life experiences, described his goals in further detail, and continued to inspire us with his message of hope. His reminds us that while apraxia of speech is a part of his life journey, it does not define who he is a person
