My treatment is highly dependent on the child's current level. For non-verbal to minimally children, I will begin with gross motor imitation during play routines and move to imitation of functional motor movements (i.e. blowing bubbles, chewing foods, kissing family members/blowing kisses). Then therapy moves to imitation of environmental sounds and vowel sounds (i.e. "shhh, ew, ow, uh-oh). As a child progresses, I will focus on sounds patterns and determine targets based on vowel and consonant sounds in a child's phonemic inventory.
Through social media, I have joined many apraxia groups for professionals and families. There are few CAS community in my direct area, but I would be willing to participate in the Apraxia Walks that are closest to my community.
Parents fully participate in planned activities. They are encouraged to be a "playmate" during the session as I coach them techniques, specific vocabulary, etc. They are expected to continue practicing at home with their child in a wide variety of tasks that are discussed during therapy sessions.
I tend to use AAC as the bridge to verbal communication. I will use it as a springboard for vocalization. For instance, if a child chooses an icon to request, comment, or answer questions, I will also make the child verbalize the same word or phrases. In my sessions, it is never the only form of communication used for CAS.
