I implement the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol in my therapy sessions. The K-SLP is rooted in the principles of motor learning to include: sign-to-talk as a bridge to communication for minimally vocal children, moving from single word utterances to phrases with the use of pivot phrases, and using untaught/novel words to ensure learning of syllable shapes. I work on five lists of words including syllable shapes, favorites, common nouns, manding (requesting) words and high frequency words. When targeting these lists, I temporarily simplify the motor plan of the targets until the child is ready to progress to the adult form of the word. I target these goals using gesture, visual, and tactile cues, strategic reinforcement, blocked to random practice, errorless teaching (cueing before failure), error correction, and mixed and varying tasks to avoid over-generalization. Other therapy methods would be considered and implemented as needed in therapy to best accommodate and treat the child's individual needs.
I was an Apraxia Walk Volunteer in 2018.
Parents and caregivers are able to watch every session from a one-way observation window. Following sessions, we discuss what should be worked on at home to best assist with generalization of learned skills. I am available to answer any other questions and concerns the parent may have regarding their child. I am also available via email and phone for any remaining concerns not mentioned during the child's appointment.
I use sign-to-talk as a bridge to communication for children with limited speech output. I also have experience with PECs, ProLoQuo2Go and LAMP.
