I will meet your child where they are. Often children have already learned how to avoid talking tasks because talking has been so challenging. I will determine what is easy and comfortable for your child and build from there. This will create a more motivating atmosphere to feel successful. I am trained in a variety of approaches so will individually tailor cues and techniques. My main goal is always for your child to have a successful communicative experience at every session. This ultimately will increase self-esteem and social connectedness with all whom your child communicates with.
Parents are taught to value and reinforce their child's initiations to communicate. When a child has mastered a target form or word approximation parents are given ideas to use this form at home to promote more opportunities for communicative success with the newly mastered word form.
I offer my kids with CAS many forms of alternative/augmentative communication at the start including: sign/gesture/picture symbols/PECS and high-tech AAC systems. We can do an AAC evaluation on site, make recommendations, and complete funding applications. I teach the AAC course in our program to our graduate students. They are knowledgeable of current research and practices and will be excited to implement these with you, your child and your family.
