Jason McWhorter, BSN, RN, is a father, husband, and nurse. He began his medical career as an emergency medical technician, but was inspired to become a pediatric nurse after his son, Liam, was born with special needs. Jason graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and now works as a Clinical Nurse Manager in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where his son was once a patient.
Liam was a miracle before he was even born, and no one could have predicted the difficult journey that lay ahead. His story is one of struggle, hope and triumph and is a testament that you should never judge a book by its cover or a child by their diagnosis.
Jason McWhorter has been there – a parent hearing a diagnosis for his son that he never expected, especially as a nurse who knew all about diagnoses. Then it became multiple medical and clinical diagnoses, including childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), all of which required the ultimate perseverance for the entire McWhorter family. Jason eloquently tells his story about his own and his family’s journey through the challenging diagnostic and therapy process. The medical background that Jason carries with him lends to an even deeper perspective of what it’s like to be “on the other side”.
