Describe treatment approach used: I make therapy motivating for the child by establishing rapport and finding the most appropriate evidence and motor based techniques that best suit their individual personality, ability level and temperament. I believe that Augmentative communication is essential to the non-verbal /minimally verbal child. This relieves stress and anger that the child may have, so he/she can focus on purposeful exchanges to improve their own lives and the lives of their family members. I believe a child must have a desire to communicate, be ready to participate and be motivated, in order to learn. I first have to make sure these are all intact. If they are not, we work up to those levels, meeting the child/family where they currently are. I utilize blends of multi-sensory approaches (visual, tactile, gestural ), The Dynamic Temporal & Tactile Cueing (DTTC) approach and The Building Speech & Quantifying Complexity approach. I will give the family a questionnaire to fill out, indicating words and targets that would like to be worked on. That information, in addition to the information obtained from the evaluation, will create a target vocabulary. Increasing expressive language is always incorporated into the current and/or future outlook.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: Parents are an integral part of the team. It is my job to educate the parents on how to take the tools/targets learned in therapy and incorporate them into their everyday routines. It is through this, that the process of motor learning and generalization take place. Depending upon the child, parents are welcome to observe therapy. I find it very helpful because I learn more about the child and the parent can both learn and ask any questions they may have. Parents are given a packet to fill out before therapy starts. This packet indicates words of places/people/activities/toys etc., that the child is familiar with. Important words that the family would like the child to use are considered and are incorporated, if within the child's level, into therapy.

Describe your past and current involvement in the Apraxia community? I have taken many courses to gain the most recent knowledge. I belong to a EBP website that publishes the most recent research in speech and language, some of which have been about CAS. In my past 17 years, I have had children with CAS and have always directed them to the CASANA website for information and support. I have been specifically trained by a bootcamp graduate and we are beginning a program to help other professionals in their dilemma's with the diagnosis of CAS.
