When I have determined a child is exhibiting characteristics of CAS, my treatment approach with them focuses on the movements of speech, not "working on sounds." During therapy the best practice is to not use pictures or games that will distract and limit amount of productions. Instead, I focus the child's attention on my face and have them attend to the target movements. After we have practiced for a block of time, I will give them a short break with an activity such as ball bouncing, putty, or a short video to keep them motivated. At first I provide maximal support with visual, tactile, and auditory models and fade those cues over time. I use principals of motor learning which involve repetitive motor practice, moving from blocked to random practice and intrinsic and extrinsic feedback.
Attended course, and visited websites. I would like to be more involved with any upcoming activities.
I work in a school setting, so I communicate with parents by sending home targets that have been practiced in speech that day. I also educate them on my cueing and strategies during therapy so they can give the child extra practice at home. I tell them it's like learning to play the piano, practice is key!
I provide AAC supports such as Ipad apps and pictures and signs so that children can make their ideas known and get their wants and needs met in school and at home. It is important that they have some additional forms of communication in place while they are becoming better verbal communicators.
