Describe treatment approach used: My therapy process starts with seeing what the child can independently produce and picking vocabulary targets that the child is likely to have success producing with some assistance. These vocabulary words should be words that the child will be motivated to use in therapy and in everyday life. After selecting targets, these words are practiced with very high frequency in fun, linguistically relevant activities to establish the motor plan for the syllables/words. When needed, modeling, tactile, visual, verbal, and written cues are used. As a child moves towards increased independence, different prosodic productions of the sound are introduced to further increase the child’s flexibility in producing the targets. My therapy approach is a combination of motor programming and linguistic approaches.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: Parents are integral to every step of the therapy process. Within every session we discuss successes and challenges that have occurred between sessions and a plan to address these. Word lists are shared with families, and modified for special events in the child’s life. This makes learning speech meaningful to the child. Successful cueing is modeled for parents. I also love to have parents show me how they target a goal at home either in person or through videos and then feedback is provided.
