Describe treatment approach used: I determine treatment goals based on the child’s current phonemic repertoire. From the list of the child’s consistent phonemes I build a functional vocabulary based on parent and/or teacher report. I first have the child imitate a short consonant-vowel (CV) or vowel-consonant (VC) sequence; accompanying the elicited sound with placement cues and tactile feedback when possible.

As it is imperative that the child remain engaged, I try to make each activity fun or action based. For instance, if working on the word “off” I might use a deck of cards, flicking the top card off the deck (and across the room / into the floor) with each correct attempt at the word. This drill based activity can elicit as many as 52 trials on one word, while keeping the child engaged and motivated.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: When possible I encourage the parent to observe the session. When the parent’s presence disrupts the child, I might send an occasional short video clip of the successful word production and the placement cue used to elicit that sound.

Describe your past and current involvement in the Apraxia community? My past involvement in the Apraxia community began with participation in Bootcamp in the summer of 2014. Also that summer I presented at the national convention in Nashville, Tennessee, with a power point presentation entitled: Out of the Box and Into the Floor. Following the summer of 2014, I presented on the “Basics of CAS” to local community agencies and to two County school systems.

Currently I am employed by the Burke County School System, serving in a special needs separate school (preK-21), and in a Middle School. I have several children on my caseload who have CAS as a secondary diagnosis.
